Division of Human Nutrition
Education - Short Courses
A variety of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities are offered to dietitians, including those living overseas, who are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa. CPD has become compulsory for all South African health professionals including dietitians. CPD aims to provide education and training beyond the requirements for entry into the profession of dietetics. In 2002, the Division's Nutrition Information Centre (NICUS) initiated the provision of free-of-charge online CPD accredited articles from the recent literature. The quizzes (12 multiple-choice questions) are accessed through the NICUS website, using the WebCT platform. Human Nutrition also participates in the "StellMed Updates" CPD program to health care practitioners.
NICUS offers short courses on nutrition to the industry and health professionals. These courses are accredited for Continuing Education Units (CEU's) and provide delegates with the most up to date and authoritive information on the topic of choice. The Centre has amassed vast experience in the dissemination of scientifically independent and correct nutrition information to both the scientific community and the lay public on a national and international level. NICUS successfully conducted the training on nutrition and HIV/AIDS as part of the Comprehensive Plan for HIV and AIDS, Care, Management and Treatment in the Northern Cape Province and Mpumalanga Province, in 2003 and 2005, respectively.
